John Wessels is a Westchester local, born and raised, attending all local schools through Westchester High. He attended Chico State University where he played on the school’s basketball and volleyball teams. After graduation, John began a lifelong career as a science teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District, mainly at Orville Wright Middle School and finishing at Dana Middle School in San Pedro.
Alongside his teaching duties, he also coached the Westchester High School boys and girls volleyball teams to win city championships. For many years he was the Coed Commissioner for the Southern California Volleyball Association where tournaments were held in Southern California. He also helmed the Coed National Championships held annually in Las Vegas. John continues to play volleyball with many mens and coed teams, where he has played with elite players from collegiate and national levels. He was also a Board member of the Westchester Del Rey Little League, and an AYSO coach. At Da Vinci High School, he began his coaching career as a Volunteer Assistant Coach along with his wife, Mylah Wessels.
John is a proud father of his kids, Kira and Tyler (DVS Alumnus). He enjoys reading, camping, skiing, mountain bike riding and hiking, especially in the Sierras and the beautiful trek to and from Mt. Whitney. He loves that he continues to be a part of the DV family.
