WDV Athletics Update (Dec. ’24)
As winter settles in, our WDV Athletics program is heating up! Over the past month, our Varsity and JV winter sports teams have been busy making waves. With 86 games played, two successful tournaments hosted, and countless hours of hard work and determination, our athletes are showing incredible progress and heart.
Season Highlights
Boys Basketball:
- In November, Boys Varsity Basketball hosted the 4th Annual WDV Holiday Classic. They welcomed teams from around the South Bay to play a 5 day varsity level tournament. What a great pleasure to house so many great teams, players and schools.
- During December the Wolves were on the road competing at tournaments at Calvary Chapel Downey, Torrey Pines and West Torrance.

- The Wolves took home 1st place at the Calvary Chapel Downey Tournament with Jameson Johnson being MVP and Canaan Rodriguez named All Tournament!

- December 21- they took on the Mira Costa Mustangs in their first Bay League game of the season!

- The Boys Basketball team received a special guest speaker and Da Vinci alumni in December, 2021 All CIF Center Taka Mahe visited and shared his experiences with the players. Taka was a player in the basketball program for four years, playing Varsity for three and leading the team to the CIF quarterfinals 2021. During his time at Da Vinci Communications he also participated in Cross Country and Track and Field.
- Taka was able to speak about his amazing athletic journey, including the hard work and dedication it takes to play a sport at the Division 1 level. In addition, he was able to speak with the players on what the balance of athletics and academics looks like at a prestigious University like UCLA.

Girls Basketball:
- The girls basketball team has been putting in the work! Training 5 days a week and competing in tournaments like the 47th Annual Downey Varsity Classic, the Glenn-Norwalk Varsity Classic, and the 19th Annual Covina Classic.
- The program has brought on two new assistant coaches, Rosanne Sanfillipo and Terrica Franklin, who’s mentorship and coaching has added a new layer of expertise to Coach Faust’s leadership. The girls’ confidence is growing and undoubtedly showed in their first league game against South high school on December 18.
Girls Soccer:
- The JV and Varsity girls soccer programs are off and running this winter season! Our WDV varsity team is off to a great start with a 6-3 record. The varsity team hosted their first home game on the new Wiseburn Da Vinci field with a 5-0 victory over King Drew on December 20.
- The girls are are hard at work bringing their individual skills and expertise while finding their rhythm as a team. Coach Mimi has high expectations for this season given the caliber of play and tactical thinking she has seen already.
Boys Soccer:
- The Varsity and Junior Varsity Boys Soccer teams have been grinding in the pre-season run up to Pioneer League play. They have played against teams from all other southern California in an effort to sharpen their skills for what is to be an exciting 2024-25 soccer season.
Spring Sports
Spring sports have completed their tryouts and have been regularly announcing rosters. Congratulations to all our student-athletes who made the Varsity and JV teams in archery, baseball, track and field, softball, and swimming!
