Fall Exhibition Nights - A Huge Success!

Students demonstrate the depth of their

knowing, doing and reflecting.

DVD Exhibition Our Exhibition Nights last month were a huge success, with hundreds of parents, grandparents, community members, friends and prospective families coming out to see and participate in presentations by our K-12 students. Using oral presentations, digital media, and other forms of mixed media, students demonstrated how they were able to tackle real-world problems and challenges requiring critical thinkingDVS Exhibition,

problem solving, decision making, teamwork, effective communication and other important 21st century skills vital to academic and lifelong success.

Exhibitions are an important component of project-based learning and assessment, and provide a comprehensive view of each student's knowDVIA Fall Exhibitionledge and mastery of the curriculum. We wish to thank everyone who attended the Exhibitions -- and especially the many volunteers who rolled up their sleeves to help us prepare for this important event. It is because of your participation, thoughtful questions and encouragement that our students are evolving into sound young men and women.

Da Vinci Science Hosts 1st Annual Engineering Exposition!
Da Vinci Robotics team and their
mentors at the 1st Annual Engineering Exposition!
On November 30, Da Vinci Science celebrated its 1st Annual Engineering Exposition, hosted by Boeing and the Da Vinci Science Robotics team, featuring engineers from Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, Chevron, Boeing and SpaceEx who shared their journey to their current engineering careers and some of the lessons they have learned along the way. In addition, DVS students from each of our 6 Project Lead the Way Engineering classes (Intro to Engineering Design, Principles of Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Digital Electronics, Biotechnical Engineering, and Engineering Design & Development) presented some of the engineering projects they have been working on this semester. It was a terrific evening of connection and learning by all!

Da Vinci Science Update
Thanksgiving Month, Truly the Month of Thanks
Dear Families,

The end is near! (of the first semester, that is ☺) This week begins the portfolio defenses for our students, which means that we will have a special schedule, in which students come to school from 8am-12noon OR from 12 noon to 4pm on Monday-Friday.

Our Exhibition Night last month was a terrific success, with hundreds of parents, grandparents, community members and prospective students coming out to see and participate in the presentations by our students of what they have been learning in their classes this semester. Thank you to all of you who came out, and especially to all of you who took the time to write thank-you cards to our teachers (we have more available - stop by any time and pick some up from Jackie at the front desk!).

Exhibition Portfolio Defenses are
one of our most important signature practices, giving students an opportunity to present to a panel of their teachers the topics on which they have demonstrated mastery over the course of the last 16 weeks. We invite and encourage you to attend your child's portfolio defense!

As a reminder, Friday December 14th is the last day for students to turn in any missing, late or incomplete work, and the last day of classes for the 1st semester is Friday, December 21st. We will be mailing out students' first semester report cards on Saturday December 22, so expect to see them arrive in your mailbox shortly thereafter.

Don't forget to check us out on iTunes U!! Download the iTunes U app, search for "Wiseburn" and check out the videos and projects our students have made! > Da Vinci iTunes U

On behalf of all of us in the Da Vinci Family, I wish you a safe a restful holiday season and a happy beginning to the new year! We will be ready to welcome back all of our students on the first day of second semester, Monday January 14th - enjoy your rest everyone!

Da Vinci Innovation Academy (K-8) Update:
School and Family Collaborative Education
The end of the semester also means time for Presentations of Learning and reflections of what the year has been like thus far. While the POLs in June will be Panel presentations for all Cores, at the semester our POLs will look a little different for each level. Make sure to check in with your teachers to see how your learner will end the semester with a bang!

DVIA reading buddies We have grown tremendously this year as a community. In Fall 2012, we increased enrollment to 270, developed a new portfolio system, added a literacy specialist, math specialist and parent/elective coordinator, doubled our elective classes offered, and increased our space by one additional classroom. We are now using six different blended learning curricula.

Starting this year, students in Cores 1, 2 and 3 receive an extra workshop block of Literacy each regular cohort day to further support their reading and writing skills. Students are grouped within this block based on reading and writing needs and skills to further differentiate learning and better personalize the learning process during the school day.

Students in Cores 4 and 5 receive an extra workshop block of Mathematics to make sure they are adequately prepared for higher level math. There are math levels available to meet each student's needs. All Math workshop blocks use "CPM" (college preparatory math), a project-based and constructivist curriculum also used by our high schools.

DVIA sack races We are extremely excited to offer electives on Tuesdays and Thursdays at AdventurePlex in Manhattan Beach on students' off-site day and at DVIA on their on-site day. Each block of electives is intentionally designed to offer two sessions - one academic and the other extra-curricular based. Some of our elective offerings are:  yoga, beading and jewelry making, Project Lead The Way electrical engineering, gardening, drawing and painting, musical theater, dance and choreography, Spanish, basketball, comic strip design, College Preparatory Math, mask making and more.

Additionally, we launched a new community website, www.davincik8.org, to support our family collaborative education. It is a place for inspiration, educational support, and collaboration.  Please check it out!

We are enormously proud of our students, families, faculty and staff. On behalf of all of us at the Da Vinci Innovation Academy, have a wonderful and restful holiday season.

With much gratitude,

- Nicole Tempel Assisi, Da Vinci Innovation Academy Principal

  • College classes & industry-based seminars
  • Online curriculum & technology
  • Parent workshops & staff professional development
  • Day-to-day operating expenses that are not funded by the state of California

We are deeply grateful to Chevron and Lily Craig, Chevron's External Affairs Manager, for their ongoing support of Da Vinci Schools and for their generosity in establishing The Chevron Matching Challenge.

The Annual Giving Campaign is Da Vinci Schools' top fundraising priority and the fundraiser we ask EVERY family to support.
