Dear Da Vinci Families & Friends:

Many Voices, One Da Vinci Community

With the start of the new school year, we celebrate another milestone. For the first time, Da Vinci Schools have kindergartners and seniors on campus, each with a story to tell that is unique and personal.

We are many voices, but one Da Vinci Community united in our vision of hands-on, real-world learning, deep and caring relationships, and innovation supported by solid research.

These are exciting times at Da Vinci Schools, and we are energized about our future.  We are so grateful for the tremendous support of our students, families, staff, board members, authorizing school district, community partners, donors and volunteers. On behalf of the entire Da Vinci Community, we look forward to a happy and productive academic year!

With gratitude,

K-8 Update

Da Vinci Innovation Academy Opens Its Doors With 215 Students

DVIA first dayWhat an amazing first day! The excitement was building for weeks but there was nothing like seeing so many smiling and enthusiastic faces as we welcomed our first cohort to campus on Aug. 25. What was even nicer was those same smiles were there at the end of the day!

It was wonderful to have coffee with many parents (an event that I hope can be a regular treat throughout the year).

I had the pleasure of visiting every classroom. I especially enjoyed seeing Jose's class doing circle time and reading in the loft; joining Janette's class to observe the tortoise; visiting Darlene and Jennifer's class while they wrote and drew in their journals about their day and created beautiful identity art; joining Chris and Kaitlin's class as they built a cohesive team and named DVIA first day2their cohort; and listening to the fun spirit of the middle school team celebrate each other and share their reflections during class meeting. Ending the day with an assembly where all of our students cheered each other on as we put together a puzzle that represented our close knit community was a perfect ending to our first day. I could not be more pleased with how our first day went. I am honored to work with our staff, parents and students to make sure that every day will be as positive as our first day.

Da Vinci Design Update
Da Vinci Design Opens at New Isis Ave. Location
On August 16th we opened our doors to Da Vinci Design and kicked off our 3rd year at our new Del Aire campus! We heard a few Designers profess that they miss their Science counterparts but mostly they are very happy with their new digs.  Students are now in full swing with both academic and design endeavors. This year has brought some change to the students as they are enrolled in college prep seminars and design seminars.  We are grateful to welcome several local professors and designers to our team.  Design Day 1
This semester we have an American Studies course taught by El Camino College professor Kirsten Resnick, a Toy/Product Design seminar led by designer David Chodosh, a mural painting seminar led by artist Steve O'Laughlin, a film seminar led by Nathan Cooke and a music making course taught by a professional musician. In addition, we are offering Project Lead The Way classes, Introduction to Engineering and Civil Engineering and Aerospace seminars.

All 11th grade students have begun to work with college counselors Karen Grace-Baker and Candice Mackey to help them prepare for the college applications process.  Several 10th grade students are preparing for the Spanish Language AP exam led by Da Vinci teacher Claudia Najarro and the World History AP exam led by Da Vinci teacher Ricardo Jara. Our 9th grade students just returned from the Overnighter retreat at Oakbridge where the faculty and staff focused on team and culture building.  We can't wait to meet everyone at Back to School Night on September 22 (6-8 pm), and please look forward to our first progress report at the end of the month.

Our 9th grade class and student leaders just returned from a fantastic Overnighter experience at Oakbridge, a beautiful retreat center in Ramona, CA. There was plenty of fun, high-energy challenges that left the Class of 2015 drenched, and group discussions all focused on building community, learning about Da Vinci culture, and setting a positive tone for the new school year. We had so much fun! To get a taste of the Da Vinci Science Overnighter experience, please click on the video link above.

Science Day 1

First day of school @ Da Vinci Science

Meet our Faculty + Staff

At Da Vinci Schools, our students aren't the only ones who work hard and play hard. Our faculty and staff do too! Our "work hard, play hard" culture helps to build a strong team spirit. Science principal Steve Wallis and teacher Steve Anderson (below) enjoyed a friendly scooter race on the first day of school.

Seniors are getting help with college applications, learning about financial aid, and selecting a major.
