Greetings to you -- both new and returning Da Vinci families!
In its short time of
operation, Da Vinci Schools have already earned a reputation for innovation, hands-on learning, and a
deep commitment to our community of learners. By sending your student to Da Vinci,
you make a commitment to a college
preparatory program, second to none!
This last school year, we came in 1st
and 2nd at the Los Angeles County Science Fair, came in 2nd place at the Northrop Grumman Innovation Challenge, and held two school-wide exhibitions - See "A teaching model that would make Da Vinci proud" and "Hawthorne school makes it fun." Students "defended their digital portfolios" to
make it to the next grade level. Every student went on college field trips to USC, UCLA, Pepperdine, Cal State L.A., and The Claremont Colleges. We took students on an overnighter retreat to San Diego, opened the Northrop Grumman innovation Lab, had
64 10th grade students participate in job shadow experiences around the South Bay,
and had nearly
80 students complete their first college level class while only in 9th
and 10th grade.
Our students built pinhole
cameras, launched projectiles with Trebuchets, competed in film
festivals, participated in community service projects, and competed in the
Da Vinci Olympic Games.
In addition, we earned full accreditation from the Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC).
This year will be no
exception as we continue with our current program and kick off new
programs, including our Apprenticeship/Internship program, Project Lead the Way Engineering
Program, and our Otis College Design Certificate Program. We are also
this summer to expand existing programs such as our Early College program that will now, in addition to Speech Classes, also offer Film and
will next year include History, English, Research and Business.
What will your child do while
Vinci? The possibilities are endless! We are looking forward to
you to engage your child in college preparatory, project based learning that prepares every Da Vinci student to graduate college-ready, career-prepared, and community-minded.

| ||Parent Group Meeting - July 19 @ 6 pm|
Please join us for our first Parent Group Meeting of the new school year on Monday, July 19, 2010, at 6 pm. This is a great opportunity to meet new and returning families, and to learn how you can get involved at Da Vinci Schools and contribute to our wonderful school community.
At our end-of-the-year Parent Association Meeting in May, we
discussed how much the teachers appreciated receiving their "New School
Year Baskets" in the Fall that were filled with gift certificates, school supplies, and other
miscellaneous items that the teachers needed throughout the year to help supplement
what the school was able to provide. A
vote was taken and we all agreed that a $20.00 donation per family would cover
the costs involved.
Please join us on July 19 to start planning for the new school year. If you are able to donate at that time and/or provide some of the items listed below, it would be most appreciated!

| ||Da Vinci Overnighter for 9th Grade Students|
We have an exciting opportunity planned for all 9th grade students during the first week of September! The
Da Vinci Overnighter offers
freshman students the opportunity to get away to the beautiful San Diego
Mountains and to participate in community-building activities
designed to strengthen the connections with each other and their
teachers. The overnight experience is an important part of Da Vinci's
program, and we want every student to attend!!
The overnight stay
will take place at Oakbridge
a retreat center in Ramona,

Brand-new Da Vinci polos and sweatshirts on sale beginning July 15, available in a rainbow of colors
As part of the new dress code at Da Vinci Schools, all students will be required to wear:
Vinci collared shirt
(long or short sleeve) with the
Da Vinci logo OR a
collared dress shirt or polo shirt.
- Pants/shorts/skirts must be Khaki,
slacks or jeans. All shorts and
girls must be 2 inches from knee or longer.
and sweatshirts must be Da Vinci wear or college gear.

| ||Annual Giving Volunteers Needed|
The Annual Giving Campaign is Da Vinci Schools' first giving priority and the only fundraising activity where we ask every family to participate. Every gift -- at any level -- truly matters.
Volunteers are at the heart of this effort, and throughout the year these volunteers take time out of their personal lives to make calls, write thank yous, and motivate others in support of the Annual Giving Campaign. Strong participation encourages
others to give, encourages foundations and corporations to invest in our
schools, and sends a message to the community that Da Vinci Schools make a
difference. We need your help to achieve our goal of 100% participation for the 2010-2011 Annual Giving Campaign that will begin in October. Annual Giving Campaign Co-Chairs
Responsibilities: Seeking two highly dedicated and motivated Annual Giving Campaign Co-Chairs to serve as leaders of the Campaign, coordinate volunteers, input donor and donation information into database, follow-up on matching gifts, make thank you calls, write personal thank you notes and emails, draft letters, flyers and web content, run statistical reports, create call lists, and more. This position requires a commitment of approximately 5 hours per week (at least two hours per week must be on campus)
. Make a personal gift or commitment to the Annual Giving Campaign
Time frame: starts immediatelyClass Leaders
Responsibilities: Help us achieve 100% participation by encouraging families to make a gift. You will make phone calls and send regular email updates to families to enlist their support, keep in touch with the Annual Giving co-chairs, prepare activity reports for your class, and collect and report new contact information. Make a personal gift or commitment to the Annual Giving Campaign
Time frame: starts early-OctoberAnnual Giving Callers
Responsibilities: You will make 10-30 phone calls on behalf of the Annual Giving Campaign. You will contact families that have not given in the current fiscal year by using a call list and phone script provided to you. During this conversation, you will ask families to participate in the Annual Giving Campaign, collect and report new email addresses, phone numbers, and mailing addresses. Spanish speaking volunteers are also needed! Make a personal gift or commitment to the Annual Giving Campaign.
Time frame: starts early-November
