Amped About Design
Capitalizing on the popularity of the Dr. Dre Beats headphones, product designers from Karten Design worked with Da Vinci Design 9th grade students to design headphones addressing issues of social change. At the end of the project, students presented their headphones at Exhibition Night, during which Karten designers chose 8 students whose work stood out, and invited them to exhibit their work at the A+D Museum on Wilshire Blvd. in LA. The collaboration was featured in Fast Company's blog, "4 Things That Ninth-Graders Can Teach You About Risk-Taking Design."
Cultivating a Pipeline of Future Engineers
As part of Da Vinci Science High School’s 4-Year Engineering Pathway, featuring Project Lead The Way curriculum, 10 classes are currently being taught in partnership with industry partners, including Northrop Grumman, Boeing, Raytheon, Aerospace Corp., ComDev, the Office of Naval Research, Gensler, CXC Simulations, and Olson Visual. Chevron provides significant funding to our science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs.
DIRECTV mentors have been working with two dozen Da Vinci Design juniors and seniors as part of the DIRECTV Mentor Program. DIRECTV mentors meet one-on-one with Da Vinci mentees twice per month over the lunch hour to discuss college and career planning. Recent topics have focused on the college application process, writing the personal statement, financial aid, and tracking college costs.
The Da Vinci Science Robotics Team, known as the Vitruvian Bots, is working side by side with engineering mentors from Boeing, Raytheon, ComDev, and DARPA to design and build a robot as part of the FIRST Robotics engineering competition.
Professors from Art Center College of Design are teaching college level classes at Da Vinci Design. Recent classes have included Ilustration, Design 360, Architecture, Product Design, and Photography.
Learning in the Real World
As part of our Real World Learning program, Da Vinci has placed more than 470 juniors and seniors in unpaid internships and work experience programs since our inception. Our Work Experience partners include Northrop Grumman, SpaceX, Belkin International, Mattel, Boeing, Hilton Hotels, and many more.
Collaborating on Health Design
The X Prize Foundation joined Karten designers and researchers, Da Vinci biology and history teachers, and students to design a project that would merge the idea of immigration with biology. The end result was a “tricorder lite” project that challenged 130 juniors to create a tricorder to measure sickness. The Da Vinci-Karten-X Prize collaboration was featured in Fast Company’s blog, “What Happens When High School Students Take a Stab at the Tricorder X Prize?”
